ARISTEIDES AND LYRA

Live from the 11th of May Salle Gaveau, Paris
Premiered by the Orchestre Colonne - Conducted by Marc Korovitch

Aristeides and Lyra is a powerful symphonic poem inspired by ancient Greek mythology, but its story is timeless. It tells the tale of Aristeides, a man who ventures into the depths of the Underworld to retrieve the soul of his beloved Lyra, taken from him by Hades.

The music follows his descent into darkness—a world of shadows, danger, and uncertainty. Each step he takes is painted in sound: hesitant at first, then more determined as he nears the river Styx, where Lyra’s soul drifts. There, the music shifts. It turns tender, fragile, filled with longing, as Aristeides recalls their love. He reaches out... but is torn away by the fury of the Érynies, guardians of the underworld.

A frantic chase begins, violent and breathless. Captured and brought before Hades himself, Aristeides makes an unthinkable offer: his own life in exchange for Lyra’s. The god of the dead, moved or amused, accepts.

From that moment, the music swells with tension and release. The earth trembles. Lyra’s soul returns to her body. She awakens. There is joy—but it is brief. Aristeides reveals the truth of his sacrifice. Lyra weeps, begs him to stay, but he urges her to live, to carry their love forward. In a final embrace, they part forever.

This is a work about love at its most profound: selfless, fearless, and eternal. Through sweeping orchestral textures and vivid emotional shifts, Aristeides and Lyra reminds us that true love is eternal.
